Which color of solder mask is used on PCBs?

2024-09-21

One important aspect of PCBs is the solder mask, a layer of coating applied over the copper traces to prevent solder bridges, solder splashes and electrical shorts. The solder mask also provides insulation and electrical shielding to the circuit board.

The most commonly used color for solder mask is green, but there are other options available. They include red, blue, white, yellow, black, and even clear.

Choosing the color of the solder mask depends on various factors, including aesthetics, functionality, and ease of use during testing and inspection. For instance, green is the standard color for PCBs as it provides a high contrast and is more affordable compared to other colors.

However, many companies are using different colors for their PCBs as part of their branding strategy. The different colors help distinguish their products in the market. It is not uncommon to find PCBs with unique colors such as purple, pink, and orange.
